How to Specify Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings For Your Project–CISPI Recommended Specifications

CISPI Specifications

  • CISPI 301-00
Standard Specification for hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings for sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications. (This specification is reviewed and revised every five years. The number following 301 indicates the last year of revision.)
  • CISPI 310-97
Specification for coupling for use in connection with hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings for sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications. (This specification is reviewed and revised every five years. The number following 310 indicates the last year of revision.)
  • CISPI Designation HS 74-86
Specification for cast iron soil pipe and fittings for hub and spigot sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications. (This seldom-referenced specification modified ASTM A-74 by making pressure testing optional and appropriate collective marks optional.)
  • CISPI Designation HSN 85
Specification for Neoprene rubber gaskets for hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings. (This seldom-referenced specification covers preformed rubber gaskets used to seal joints in hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings. The most common specification referenced today is ASTM C 564.)

ASTM Specifications

  • ASTM A 74-98
Standard specification for cast iron soil pipe and fittings. (This specification is reviewed and revised every five years. The number following A 74 indicates the year of latest revision.)
  • ASTM A 888-98
Standard specification for hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings for sanitary and storm drain, waste, and vent piping applications. (This specification was first printed in 1991 and will be reviewed and revised every five years. The number following A 888 indicates year of latest revision.)
  • ASTM C 564-97
Standard specification for rubber gaskets for joining cast iron soil pipe and fittings. (This specification is reviewed and revised every five years. The number following C 564 indicates the year of last revision.)
  • ASTM A 674-95
Standard practice for polyethylene encasement for ductile iron pipe for water or other liquids. (This specification is updated and revised every five years. The number following A674 indicates the year of last revision. This specification and ANSI A21.5 are referenced for external corrosion protection for cast iron installed underground. The ASTM A 74-98 and A 888-98 contain information contained in this standard.
  • ASTM C 1277-97
Standard specification for shielded couplings joining hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings. New standard for shielded couplings used to join hubless cast iron pipe and fittings. (CISPI 310 couplings meet this standard as do most heavy duty couplings.)

Other Specifications

  • CS 188-66
Specification for cast iron soil pipe and fittings. (Issued by The U.S. Department of Commerce in 1966 includes extra heavy and service pipe. This specification was another version of ASTM A 74 and is occasionally referenced in some city plumbing codes. It is no longer a current specification.)
  • FM 1680
Approval standard for couplings used in hubless cast iron systems for drain, waste, and vent, sewer, rainwater or storm drain systems installed above and below ground in industrial, commercial, and residential construction. (Issued by Factory Mutual Research in January 1989. This specification is promoted by Clamp-All Corporation for heavy duty coupling specification. This specification is seldom referenced in any model plumbing codes since it requires a proprietary testing agency. A better reference is ASTM C 1277.)
  • ASME/ANSI B 16.45-1998
Cast iron fittings for sovent® drainage systems. Cast iron fittings for sovent® drainage systems. (Issued by ASME in 1987, this specification covers cast iron sovent aerator and deaerator fittings.)
  • ASSE 1043
Cast iron fittings for sovent® drainage systems. Cast iron fittings for sovent® drainage systems. (This specification covers cast iron sovent aerator and deaerator fittings.)
  • CSA B 602-M99
Mechanical couplings for drain, waste, and vent pipe and sewer pipe. (This specification, issued by the Canadian Standards Association, covers couplings used in transition between dissimilar materials and the same materials. CSA B 602 is not referenced as a coupling standard by any model plumbing code, except for use as underground transition couplings. The standard is in metric units only.)
  • CSA B 70-M97
Cast iron soil pipe, fittings and means of joining. (This specification, issued by the Canadian Standards Association, covers cast iron soil pipe and fittings. Although the title refers to joining, the reader is referred to CSA B 602. This standard is in metric units only.)
  • WWP 401F
Federal specification for pipe and pipe fittings, cast iron soil. (This specification, issued by U.S. Department of Defense, refers back to CISPI 301 and ASTM A 74 for the material specifications. This specification includes information about packaging, compliance reports, etc... It is probable that this standard will be deleted by federal agencies. CISPI 301, CISPI 310, and ASTM A 74 are currently referenced by the Department of Defense and the Army Corp of Engineers.)
  • GEGS-15410
Corps of Engineers Guide Specification, Military Construction. (This specification includes references to CISPI 301 and ASTM A 74 for soil pipe and fittings, and CISPI 310 for hubless couplings. This specification is also used by the General Services Administration.)
