The Gold Standard of Cast Iron

Do Your Pipe and Fittings Have the CI Mark?

In a world where global outsourcing is ever-present, it’s essential to specify and install cast iron soil pipe and fittings that are manufactured in accordance with standards. The Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute provides manufacturing standards and CISPI technicians conduct three unannounced quality inspections at member foundries. American-made cast iron soil pipe and fittings bear the CI mark, which is the gold standard of cast iron.

Not All Cast Iron Is The Same.

American-made cast iron soil pipe and fittings manufacturers adhere to the Institute’s two standards – CISPI 301 and CISPI 310. These standards contribute to life safety, ensuring product quality and harmonization across manufacturers. Cast iron soil pipe and fittings made in the U.S. comes from 96% post-consumer scrap, including brake drums, radiators, and more. The metallurgy of the product is monitored and tested multiple times a day to ensure it meets the CISPI standard. There’s a high degree of traceability because the cast iron pipe is marked in the foundry – not out in the pipe yard.

Why Markings Matter

The markings on your cast iron soil pipe provide a lot of information. In addition to having the CI mark, every pipe also includes the following:

  • Recycle symbol – cast iron soil pipe and fittings are 100% recyclable at the end of service
  • Country of origin
  • Manufacturer name
  • Product
  • CI mark
  • Listings
  • Date/time stamp – which is marked in the foundry
